Solomons Maryland or Solomons Island is an unincorporated community in Calvert County located at the southern end of the state. It’s home to about 2100 residents and has become the day trip destination for the Baltimore and Washington DC Metro area. Solomon Islands is a major boating center at the mouth of the Patuxent River. This charming community dates back to the Revolutionary war and is known for its preserved historic Drum Point Lighthouse and Calvert Marine Museum. It’s been voted as one of the happiest little seaside towns along the eastern coast known for delicious seafood, gardens, and fabulous fishing.
Nestled around the harbor where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay, the Solomons Island or just the general Solomons area was primarily isolated until a bridge was built in 1977 connecting California, Lexington Park, and the other side of the Patuxtant River to Lusby, White Sands, and of course, Solomons. The bridge leads just off Solomons Island proper to St. Mary’s County and the Patuxent Naval Air Station.

The Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is a Smithsonian-affiliated forested sculpture Park where the creations of Kenneth Snelson, George Ricky, and other major sculptures are on exhibits. Most are on loan from the National Gallery of Art or Hirshhorn Museum. It’s a wonderful place to explore with a lot of educational activities and a host of world-class artwork including pieces by Picasso, Matisse, and Miro.

The Calvert Marine Museum is a popular destination as well featuring an estuarine biology Gallery, wood carving shop, libraries and archives, the Drum Point Lighthouse and Cove Point Lighthouse, the Lore Oyster House, and the beautiful Marsh Walk.

Because this is a tourist destination you’ll find plenty of fantastic bed and breakfasts, hotels, inns, and fabulous restaurants, many of which are right on the water. You’ll find Zahniser’s Dry Dock, Kingfishers Seafood Bar and Grill, Island Hideaway, Lighthouse Restaurant and Dock Bar, and Charles Street Brasserie.  You’ll find delicious foods such as blackened scallops, Prince Edward Island mussels, crabcakes sandwiches and some of the best fish and chips you may ever have. Most of the shops and restaurants are located right along Highway four, which runs to the center of town. You’ll find markets and other amenities close by but it is primarily a tourist destination and vacation area, however, it’s home to 2100 residents give or take 100 or so depending on the season. There are beautiful waterfront homes along Back Creek or Mill Creek or even along the Patuxent River in various spots. From smaller homes starting at about $250,000 to larger properties and newer homes around $400,000-$500,000, there’s a variety of styles and designs as well as price ranges to choose from. It’s also a great location for tourism and commercial real estate. A lot of folks choose an older, larger home and then revitalize it into a cute little bed-and-breakfast or local inn. This has become a very popular real estate endeavor for many folks moving to this area. You’re no more than two hours from Baltimore for about an hour and 1/2 from Washington DC in Alexandria. The closest access point to Virginia across the Potomac River is about 45 minutes north along Highway 301 at Newburg.
