St. Inigoes holds a significant historical legacy tracing back to the early days of America, being among the pioneering colonial settlements in Maryland. This quaint town stands as a testament to the rich history of the region, recognized as an integral part of the fourth colonial settlement established in the United States.
St. Inigoes, Maryland, holds significant historical importance as part of the first colonial settlement in Maryland, alongside neighboring St. Mary’s City. Jesuit priests, arriving with the initial Maryland settlers, established their first farm and mission in St. Inigoes, supported by 20 indentured servants. They developed a tobacco plantation to sustain the mission, with remnants of their activities unearthed in archaeological excavations at Priest’s Point.
Historians believe that Governor Leonard Calvert, Maryland’s first colonial governor, is buried somewhere in St. Inigoes, likely on Webster Field, now a U.S. Naval Aircraft facility. Despite numerous archaeological digs, his grave remains undiscovered. Calvert’s sudden death, amidst religious conflict, prompted legislation promoting religious tolerance, reinforcing the colony’s commitment to peace.
St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church in St. Inigoes is the oldest continuously operating U.S. Catholic parish in English-speaking North America. Established in 1637, the church played a pivotal role in promoting religious tolerance, reflecting the Calverts’ mandate. Father James Walton initiated the construction of a new church in 1784, with Father John Carroll laying the cornerstone in 1785. The church, now a designated historic site, includes a graveyard dating back to 1641 and is a testament to St. Inigoes’ rich cultural heritage.
A portion of Western St. Inigoes was the site of the St. Inigoes Fort. This spot overlooked the St. Mary’s River during the time of colonial St. Mary’s City. This spot was used for strategic protection for defending the water access point to the city which at the time was under the threat of anti-Catholic militias. It was also being protected from Virginia Colony militias opposed to the colonization of Maryland.
The land that the Fort sat on saw a lot of shore erosion and as such the area collapsed in the St. Mary’s River. The site of the ruins now stands underwater just offshore.
St. Inigoes is home to the Webster Field Naval Facility. It is a small military installment in charge of rescue, law enforcement, safety education, and protecting citizens in the area waters. This small Naval facility operates under command of the Coast Guard Maryland-National Capital Region.
A small but popular public park used for its recreational use and public boat launch. Fishing and crabbing are allowed in designated areas as well. It is also a popular place for barbeques and picnics.
The monument is located a short walk from the end of Cross Manor Road. The USS Tulip was a Union gunship that exploded off the shore of St. Inigoes in 1864 from a boiler accident. Interestingly, it is noted as the smallest U.S. Federal Cemetary in the Country as 49 sailors died in the explosion.
This is one of the very few places in the area where families original to the area retain hints of an accent from the area’s original English and Irish Colonial settlers.
The novel Rob of the Bowl written by John Pendelton Kennedy was published in 1838. The story is set in 17thcentury St. Inigoes and the neighboring city of St. Mary’s City. This work of historical fiction is said to very closely mirror what life was actually like in St. Inigioes at the time. It does include historic events that did actually occur in the area.
The public schools serving St. Inigoes are part of the St. Mary’s County Public School District. Being that St. Inigoes is so small in size students attend schools in neighboring towns. Specific Schools serving the area include Spring Ridge Middle School, Ridge Elementary School, and Great Mills High School.
This rural area of southern Maryland offers many great single-family properties at more affordable price points. Many of the homes in St. Inigoes are located on large lots including several acres. Some homes are located along the quiet rivers and creeks that feed into the larger Potomac River and into the Chesapeake Bay.
